Hoyer vs. Hoyer on Balanced Budget

Posted by Brian Patrick on

FYI –

Not only has Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer announced he will not support the bipartisan BBA when it comes to the House floor this week, reports indicate Mr. Hoyer will actually whip against the bill. In 1995, Rep. Hoyer voted in favor of a similar balanced budget bill and since that time over $10 trillion has been added to the deficit. If Whip Hoyer refers to a BBA as “something necessary,” why is he voting and whipping against the bipartisan effort to get the nation’s fiscal house in order?

Minority Whip Hoyer Said He Will Not Support A BBA Similar To One He Once Voted For. “As someone who supported the 1995 balanced budget amendment, let me say that at this point in time I would not support it,” Representative Steny H. Hoyer, the Democratic whip, said in a recent meeting with reporters. Mr. Hoyer added, “I don’t have any confidence that even at a time of great challenge, that there aren’t 40 percent-plus one in the House that would oppose doing something necessary to assure the country was on a sound footing.” (The New York Times, 8/4/11)

In Fact, Aides Say Whip Hoyer Will Whip Against The Bipartisan BBA He Once Voted For. Additionally, aides say Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.) — who voted for the 1995 amendment — is whipping against this one. (Roll Call, 11/14/11)
