Legislation Helping Those with Pre-existing Conditions Scheduled for Vote Next Week

Two months ago, the Obama Administration abruptly announced the end of enrollment in the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) program, leaving thousands of Americans with pre-existing conditions without access to health insurance to help them afford the life saving care they need.

House Republicans recently urged the President to transfer funding from lower priority items so that we can continue funding health care coverage for America’s most vulnerable patients who are currently uninsured. To date, the Administration hasn't even acknowledged this request. Instead of acting to help these patients, the Administration announced more funding for other, blatantly lower priority programs through the Public Health Slush Fund.

While we share many of the same goals that the President sought to achieve with health reform: lower health care costs, increased access to quality care, and helping those most in need, there are better ways to go about doing so. House Republicans remain committed to full repeal of the health care law and advancing legislation that will actually achieve those goals.

I would like to thank the leadership of Chairman Joe Pitts, Rep. Michael Burgess, and Rep. Ann Wagner who introduced H.R. 1549, the Helping Sick Americans Now Act, and Chairman Fred Upton for advancing the legislation through the Energy and Commerce Committee.

The Helping Sick Americans Now Act will address this urgent issue, and I am pleased to stand with the many patient advocacy groups who represent thousands of Americans with serious health issues in support of this bill. I plan to schedule this bill on the House floor next week. Enough time has passed, we can’t keep America’s sickest patients in limbo any longer.
