On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice led by Attorney General Eric Holder filed a petition in federal court threatening the ability of parents to send their children to the school of their choice in Louisiana. These reforms enacted by Governor Bobby Jindal have been successful at giving low-income students a shot at a good school with dedicated teachers.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor visited New Orleans in March to see Governor Jindal's progress. There, he met Essence Jackson, whose daughter Ma'loni participates in the Louisiana Scholarship Program. The program is giving Ma'loni and many kids like her a chance to escape being trapped in failing schools.
The idea that scholarships for children like Ma'loni would be in jeopardy is a tragedy. Governor Jindal has made tremendous progress providing parents with more choice and education opportunity. It's disappointing to see the Obama Administration try to stand in the way of such progress and deny children access to a good education. Parents and students deserve better.
