House Majority Leader Eric Cantor today released the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union Address:
“Tonight, President Obama said we are united by the “profound belief in opportunity for all, the notion that if you work hard and take responsibility, you can get ahead.” I couldn’t agree more. For years, Republicans have operated under this principle and I’m relieved to hear the President was listening. However, blocking school choice programs, raising the cost of living through energy and health care regulations, and accepting the new normal of long term unemployment and a smaller workforce are antithetical to that philosophy. House Republicans have a more hopeful agenda that helps get working middle class Americans back to work, moving ahead and passing along the promise of America to the next generation.
“Tonight, President Obama said, “too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by.” I couldn’t agree more. But slashing their hours under ObamaCare reduces their take home pay, as do the increased costs and premiums under the law. House Republicans are focused on solutions that reduce costs for families living paycheck to paycheck and put more money in their pocket so they can save for the future.
“Tonight, President Obama said, “I’m eager to work with all of you” in Congress. I wish that were so. For years, President Obama has chosen to withdraw from policy debates and ignore our Constitutional balance of power. Identifying that you cannot work with a Republican House or a Democratic Senate should not be a point of pride or a governing philosophy. Let’s put away the pen, and pick up the phone and work together to find common ground. That is something all Americans expect of the Congress, as well as the President.
“Tonight, President Obama said, "we live in a world of complex threats." I could not agree more. Our role in the global economy and as a stalwart of freedom requires strong American leadership that delivers the benefits of growth and security to American families. Yet, the President’s policies around the world shake the confidence of our partners, and strengthen the conviction of our enemies. House Republicans are committed to securing our nation, supporting our allies and being that beacon of liberty once again.
“Working middle class families are looking for an optimistic agenda that creates opportunity and growth and that is what House Republicans will have to offer. Families want an America that works and leads. Let’s fight together for an America that works for everyone and leads once again.”
