House Majority Leader Eric Cantor today released the following statement commending House passage of H. Res. 499, a resolution expressing the House's support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression:
"Last week, the House overwhelmingly passed a bill to provide loan guarantees to bolster the new Ukrainian government. Today, the House has again demonstrated its support for the people of Ukraine by passing H. Res. 499, a resolution expressing the House's support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The resolution condemns Russia for its violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and long-standing interference in Ukraine's domestic politics, and calls upon the Administration to sanction those responsible for or complicit in Russia's intervention.
"I expect the House to consider further legislation to assist Ukrainian leaders as they struggle to implement difficult political and economic reforms aimed at bolstering Ukraine's weakened economy and freeing their country of corruption and malign foreign influences. I also expect the House to consider additional sanctions legislation aimed at enhancing the U.S. government’s authorities to impose meaningful consequences on those complicit in Russian aggression abroad and its human rights abuses at home."
