Hoyer Statement on Administration Announcement on Health Reform’s New Preventive Health Care Coverage
WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Administration issued regulations to implement provisions of the Affordable Care Act that make preventive care more affordable and accessible by requiring new health plans to cover recommended preventive services without charging a deductible, copayment or coinsurance:
“Today’s announcement by the Obama Administration means that, next year, as many as 41 million Americans will be able to access recommended preventive services through their health insurance plans, without being charged a deductible, copayment, or coinsurance. Access to life-saving preventive care -- including routine vaccines, cancer screenings, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol tests, and other services -- will be improved in all new plans. By 2013, as many as 88 million Americans will see their prevention coverage improve, as the health care law goes into effect and implements changes that will ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care.
“Expanding and improving access to preventive services will not only save lives, it will also save money and boost our economic productivity. Prevention and early detection of diseases will reduce treatment costs, and will help save the billions of dollars that are currently lost each year as employees miss work due to illness.
“Despite the fact that working families are already seeing this law put control of their health care back in their hands, Republicans continue to fight to repeal the health care law, which would take away benefits like expanded access to preventive care and parents' ability to keep adult children on their insurance. Democrats don't agree, and will keep working for middle class families even as Republicans fight to take control away from families and give it back to insurance companies.”
