Cantor on Debt Commission, Immigration

“If the people of this country, who are out there trying to balance their budgets and pay their bills, see that this Congress and this federal government cannot do the job that they elected us to do, then they want and deserve a new Congress."

“America is at a critical crossroads. The way that this Congress deals with the issues of taxes, health care, energy, debt and spending will determine the type of country that we want to be.

Today, we saw the Administration’s next move - what country do we want to be – by convening the President’s Debt Commission. The Leader has appointed on our side, Paul Ryan, Jeb Hensarling and Dave Camp. These are smart individuals who believe that Washington doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem. To me the President’s convening of this debt commission looks like just another effort to pass the buck. And if the people of this country, who are out there trying to balance their budgets and pay their bills, see that this Congress and this federal government cannot do the job that they elected us to do, then they want and deserve a new Congress.

From the Question and Answer Session:

Q: Mr. Cantor, can you weigh in on that (Arizona’s new immigration law)? A lot of Jewish groups have said that this smacks of Nazi Germany in the 30’s.

A: I think that that kind of analogy is something that is completely inappropriate in this discussion. I will say that I think all Americans understand that we’re a country of laws and the lawlessness which purveys the situation on the ground there is unacceptable to all Americans. We are also a country of immigrants. All of us came from somewhere. And we’re a country of legal immigration and I think many of us understand that the reason that we’ve been so successful in this country is that we have been the beacon hope and opportunity to so many from so many different places. But there’s no question that the injection of the kind of comments that were suggested just now have no place in this debate.
