Leader Cantor: "The Senate Has To Act"

Posted on

"We are still at the same place, the federal government continues to borrow nearly 40 cents of every dollar it spends. That brings up the point that there are one of two options here. Either do what we’re trying to do and cut spending, or if you are going to keep spending, you have to raise taxes. It seems to me the latter is the direction that Leader Reid, Chuck Schumer, and others want to go in. Now, let’s remember why we are here and where we are. The Democrats failed in their responsibility to pass the spending bills last Congress. They are continuing to abandon their responsibility to put forward a responsible spending plan on the CR this year. In addition to that, we see the President MIA on this issue.

"What we’re saying is this: we’ve acted and we’ll continue to act. As the Senate refuses to act, the House acted 39 days ago with H.R. 1. We have consistently acted to put forward stopgap measures, and this week again we will act. On Friday, we will bring to the floor the Government Shutdown Prevention Act, that will say to the American people, the Senate has to act prior to the expiration of the CR. If it does not act, H.R. 1 becomes the law of the land. And if there is a partial shutdown, Members will not get paid. Simple as that. We’re serious and we want to take care of this problem, so that we can get on about the business of this nation and get Americans back to work."
