Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today issued the following statement about job creation after a study featured in USA Today showed that the current state of the economy and population changes have resulted in the lowest the percentage of Americans working since the Reagan Administration, with only 45.4% currently employed:
“We need to get Americans working again, and the only way to do that is to create an environment that encourages investment, fosters innovation, and allows people to have a fair shot at earning success. House Republicans are taking multiple steps to encourage economic growth that will make Washington a partner to – not an inhibitor of – job growth. We are committed to an aggressive pro-growth agenda that includes comprehensive reform of our tax code, reducing trade barriers, fixing our faulty patent approval system and reforming our immigration system to ensure the best and the brightest are able to stay in our country to work and boost economic growth. Further, we must find ways to ensure that start-ups and high growth companies – known as gazelle companies which create roughly 10 percent of all new jobs – are not limited by the federal government.
“Furthermore, House Republicans are changing the culture in Washington from one of spending to one of savings, finally getting our fiscal house in order after years of mismanagement. Tomorrow, the House will vote on a budget that implements serious spending cuts and strengthens our entitlement programs, so that they can be preserved for future generations. While we are tackling our nation’s debt head-on and making Washington begin to live within its means, the Democrats’ only plan for fiscal responsibility is to raise taxes on the American people so they can keep spending money hand over fist. This study is another reminder that President Obama’s push to raise taxes is the opposite of what we need right now. Tomorrow, millions of Americans will send their hard earned dollars to Washington, and the last thing that the President, Leader Reid, and Leader Pelosi should do is ask them to send more.”
