Leader Cantor Statement on Tax Day

Posted on

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today issued the following statement on tax day:

“Today, millions of Americans will send their hard earned dollars to Washington, joining millions of others who have already paid their taxes. At a time when too many of our neighbors remain out of work, the last thing that President Obama, Leader Reid, and Leader Pelosi should do is demand that working families, investors, and small businessmen and women send more of their money to Washington. Yet despite widespread agreement that tax hikes cause job loss, that is exactly their plan.

“Last week, President Obama again demanded that families and small businesses pay higher taxes; a direct affront to the bipartisan December deal that he has repeatedly credited for America’s economic uptick and recent job growth. We all agree that we need to address our fiscal crisis, but taxing struggling families and business people is not the answer, as recent employment reports have made clear.

“We must to cut spending, strengthen our insolvent entitlements programs and tighten our belt so that the government can start to do more with less. We also understand that cutting spending isn’t enough to put America on the path to prosperity, which is why our budget also stresses fundamental tax reform. A more competitive tax system will get our economy churning, create jobs and spur investment in the private sector.

“Americans don’t want their taxes raised, they want Washington to get its fiscal house in order, which is why President Obama, Leader Reid, and Leader Pelosi should work with us to cut spending, reform our tax code, and rule out raising taxes while so many Americans continue to struggle to find a job.”
