WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement on the passage of the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011, and the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Reform and Modernization Act of 2011:
“From its brutal suppression of political dissent to its decades-long support for terrorism, Iran has long been a source of instability in the Middle East. Its determined pursuit of nuclear weapons dramatically adds to the grave and growing threat Iran poses to the United States, our partners in the region, and to Israel. This Administration and the previous one have imposed financial sanctions on Iran, but these measures have failed to deter Iran's leaders from the dangerous course they have charted.
“Today the House passed measures to dramatically strengthen existing sanctions against Iran, giving the President unprecedented authorities to impose crippling sanctions on Iran's economy. I call upon the President to use all means at his disposal to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability. Should he do so, he can count on broad, bipartisan support in Congress.”
