WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement in remembrance of the one year anniversary of the tragic violence that claimed the lives of six Americans and injured thirteen, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, on January 8, 2011.
“One year ago, we witnessed a heinous attack on the citizens of Tucson, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her staff. That day was a stark reminder that even in our free and open democracy, citizens and public officials can face violence and danger. Today, we stand together as a Congress and a nation to honor the memory of the six Americans who were tragically taken from their families and communities, and we pray for the recovery of the thirteen who were injured. In the year that has passed, I am grateful that Gabby has made such progress in her recovery. Her strength is an inspiration to all of us. As the families of the victims, the Tucson community, and the nation move forward, we must thank law enforcement around the country and the U.S. Capitol Police for their brave and tireless dedication to protect our citizens and ensure an unspeakable tragedy like this one does not happen again.”
