WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act:
“Today the House approved a bipartisan bill requiring the President to provide Congress and the American people with his plan for implementing the $110 billion in across-the-board cuts scheduled to occur on January 2nd. Harry Reid should clear this bipartisan bill for the President to sign as quickly as possible.
“These cuts will harm important domestic priorities such as education, medical research and law enforcement. And perhaps most notably, these cuts threaten our national security and jobs. By the end of 2014, over one million Americans could lose their jobs, including over one hundred thousand Virginians who make a living in our military, or by ensuring that our men and women in uniform have the very best equipment and support available.
“While today’s vote is a step in the right direction, the real goal remains reaching a bipartisan solution to replace these cuts with other common sense savings. Which is why last week I along with my Republican leadership colleagues in the House and Senate wrote President Obama asking him to work with us on a solution. The House has already passed our proposal to stave off the sequester. However, Senate Democrats continue making excuses for inaction and to date the President has made no indication that he’s willing to negotiate a resolution. Time is overdue for the President to come to the table and work with Congress. There should be no disagreement that a strong national defense and job creation are top priorities."
