Leader Cantor: The American People Deserve Better

Posted on

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement in response to President Obama's comments on the debt limit:

"The American people deserve better from Washington. We cannot deliver meaningful change and necessary reforms if we refuse to address out-of-control spending. In 2006, then-Senator Barack Obama said “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills.” Yet, under President Obama, we have seen record-setting deficit spending and trillions added to our nation’s debt. This is leadership failure.

"The fact that President Obama refuses to even discuss options to control our debt and spending is disappointing. The first two years of President Obama’s first term saw an explosion in spending, and now the President takes credit for the efforts of House Republicans to reign in that recklessness. We hear the President go back to his only solution, tax hikes, despite the recent rise in revenue he demanded and the negative effect it has on creating jobs and growing our economy.

"It’s time to help families by acting as they do, and caring about our budget. The Senate hasn’t passed a budget in nearly four years, and that is inexcusable. The President is unsure when he will even deliver his budget proposal this year. This is not the way to govern, and it’s not fair to the American people who sent us here to do a job. It’s time to come together, get to work, and fix what is broken."
