WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement on the Education & Workforce Committee markup of H.R. 1406, the Working Families Flexibility Act:
“Now more than ever working parents want greater control over their time. Unfortunately, under federal law the private sector is prohibited from offering comp-time instead of overtime pay, even though this option has existed in the public sector for more than 25 years. Just last year, employees at the IRS took more than 246,000 hours of comp-time in lieu of overtime pay. But an hourly employee in the private sector is denied any similar option. That is not right and it is not fair.
“Today, Chairman John Kline and the House Education and Workforce Committee advanced legislation to level the playing field and remove this unnecessary federal restriction. The Working Families Flexibility Act will provide working moms and dads with more freedom and flexibility in how they use their earned overtime hours. Through a voluntary agreement with their employers, working parents can build a bank of time to use when they need it most. In the coming weeks, the House will consider this common sense legislation to protect workers and make life work for more people.”
