Leader Cantor Delivers Remarks On #KidsFirst Research Act At Children's National

Posted on

Washington, D.C. – House Majority Eric Cantor (R-VA) today joined Representatives Tom Cole (R-OK), Renee Ellmers(R-NC), and Susan Brooks (R-IN) in discussing the importance of prioritizing pediatric research at Children’s National Medical Center. Highlights from Leader Cantor’s remarks below:

“It’s a real pleasure to be here at Children’s National. My colleagues and I chose to come here at the invitation of Dr. Newman and his team because we believe in medical research and discovery. We believe that pediatric medical research is and should be a national priority.”

“This bill says, in times of fiscal stress especially, we are called upon in Congress to set priorities. And there are a lot of reasons why medical research, and in particular pediatric research should be a priority. One is that it’s just the right thing to do.”

“Today, I met Haiden, Dmitri, Noah and Emma – and so many of the kids who have benefitted from the treatment and the research here at Children’s National. All of us as parents – I have three kids – have to believe that it is the right thing to do for a fuller life ahead of them.”

“It’s also the right thing to do because research in this country has proven to be a tremendous boon to our economy. It is a culture of innovation that allows for job growth, that allows for America to lead the world. And it starts with basic research at institutions like this.”

“First, it’s about the kids and their wellbeing and cures. Second, it’s about the economy and what it does for growth in our country. Third, ultimately, if we dedicate ourselves to this priority, we can find cures. Cures to disease will allow us to address health care costs so we can bring those down.”
