BRONX, NY - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today made the following remarks after a visit to the Bronx Charter School for Excellence:
"We are here today at the Bronx Charter School for Excellence because we have heard so much, first of all, about New York City's record of success with charter schools. In Washington last week, in the House of Representatives we passed H.R. 10, which is a bill aimed at trying to help schools like this expand, replicate, and do what they are doing for these kids. I think I could sum up my visit right now, by quoting Gioli, when she says, 'A good education makes for a successful future.' And that pretty much says it all.
"Education opportunity is the civil rights issue of our time. Too many kids don't have access to a quality education -- to be able to choose where that can take place. That's what my visit is about today. I am extremely impressed with what BCSE is about both from their Principal Charlene Reid, their Board Chair Joyce Frost, the parents, and certainly the teachers and the kids. A tremendous collaborative effort here and a real success. I look forward to seeing how we can increase the opportunity for schools like this to succeed across the country."
