WASHINGTON D.C. – House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) today made the following remarks at a press conference with House Republican leaders on reforming the earmark process:

“Most Americans know that the earmark issue is emblematic of a greater problem in Washington – that Washington is spending too much, it's incurring too much debt, and bringing on the need for higher taxes.

“The Republican Conference’s move to adopt a moratorium to try and straighten out the process is indicative of the fact that we are not the same Republican Party that was fired in 2006. By stepping up and saying that not only are we dedicated to cleaning up the process, but we also want to take the monies that would otherwise go to earmarks and put it towards retiring the debt, also speaks to the fact that we are listening to the American people.”
