WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement on, H. J. Res. 2, the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution introduced by Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia. In 1995, this measure passed the House with 300 bipartisan votes.

“The House had an opportunity to put an end to Washington’s out-of-control spending, and it is unfortunate that Democrats who supported this measure in the past chose not to today. The uncertainty caused by our nation’s $15 trillion debt is burdening families and businesses and adding to economic uncertainty. Hardworking taxpayers are rightly worried about what the debt situation means for their future and their children’s future. I thank Chairman Lamar Smith and Congressman Bob Goodlatte for their leadership on this bipartisan effort to ensure the long-term health of this country. Despite this setback, I remain focused on getting our fiscal house in order, managing down the debt and boosting economic growth so that people can get back to work.”
