WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement on the national unemployment report for December:

"While I am encouraged 155,000 people found a job last month, today's unemployment report was disappointing. We must do better. 7.8% unemployment is sadly becoming the new normal. We are barely getting by, and that is not good enough for our sons and daughters, friends and neighbors who are driving from job interview to job interview. The unemployment number also does not reflect the millions of people who have given up hope of finding a job altogether.

"House Republicans are committed to restoring that hope by getting America back to work and giving our families better financial security. We want parents to focus on helping with homework, rather than rising health care costs. We want working moms to save for college, rather than worry about which IRS form will save them a few bucks. We want graduates to find a job that matches their skills, rather than worrying about additional debt piled on top of their student loans because Washington keeps borrowing and spending.

"It's time for us to work together to find solutions to these economic challenges, and deliver better results."
