The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation was created in 1992 to support research designed to produce new discoveries in all fields of endeavor for the benefit of mankind. It sponsors national competitions designed to promote innovation in the fields of homeland security, life sciences, and education. It was initially funded from the proceeds of the sales of several commemorate coins, which were deposited with the Foundation. However, the initial revenues from coin sales are now depleted and Congress has continued to fund the foundation out of general revenues. President Obama's budget requested terminating support to the foundation and critics note the Foundation has not consistently demonstrated clear outcomes from its awards and has high overhead costs.
